Scientists in Ohio have created the first artificial humanchromosomes, an achievement that may someday allow doctors to alterpeople's genetic inheritance or cure diseases by slipping genetic"cassettes" directly into people's cells.
The artificial chromosomes, made in the laboratory from a blendof natural and synthetic human DNA, are miniature versions of humanchromosomes - the corkscrew-shaped structures inside cells that carryall the genes required for life.
